Job Position: Camp Counselor

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum age: 19 years old
  2. One year of college and/or previous camp experience or experience supervising children

Essential Function: 

To provide leadership, guidance, supervision, and mentorship to campers in a safe and nurturing environment. To further the Gales Creek Camp mission of providing positive camp experiences for children, youth, and families directly affected by type 1 diabetes while fostering independence, diabetes management, and social and life skills. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work with other counselors to provide consistent and unified leadership. 
  2. Foster a positive and nurturing atmosphere for all campers.
  3. Provide supervision for campers in a residential setting.
  4. Interpret and enforce safety and health regulations.
  5. Support the physical and emotional well-being of campers.
  6. Communicate with medical staff, demonstrate awareness of diabetes protocols and participate in blood glucose testing and monitoring duties, including overnight.
  7. Participate, lead, and assist with all camp programming, including games, hikes, swimming, arts & crafts, and other traditional summer camp programming. 
  8. Ensure the general cleanliness and sanitary conditions of camp, including private living spaces at camp.
  9. Supervise and assist camper clean-up duties.
  10. Participate in mid-summer and end of camp evaluation sessions.
  11. Maintain confidentiality of all medical information regarding campers and staff.
  12. Follow all camp rules, policies, and regulations.
  13. Follow duty schedule unless previously arranged with the Camp Director.
  14. Follow camper to staff ratios at all times.
  15. Sign out with the Camp Director when leaving camp (No Exceptions).
  16. Other duties to further the Gales Creek Camp mission and outcomes of Gales Creek Camp, as assigned.
